From the Blotter

Off balance

A Burke County man caught sleeping in his truck in the middle of the road was arrested for DUI early Thursday morning.

David Eugene Clayton Jr., 24, of 5881 McClain Bell Road, was found around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Fairway and Herndon roads, sleeping in the driver's seat of his pickup. According to a report, officers had to hit the window several times to wake Clayton up, and once he did, he took approximately two minutes to figure out how to unlock the door. Officers reported that he could not stand up once he stepped from the vehicle.

Clayton was taken to the Waynesboro Police Department, where he blew a .184 and was then transported to the Burke County Jail. He was charged with DUI and driving with an expired license.

Can I get a ride?

A drunk man was arrested after jumping in front of a patrol vehicle in an attempt to find a ride home.

Carl Davis, 49, of 4286 Quaker Road, Waynesboro, was arrested by the Waynesboro Police Department for possession of marijuana (less than one ounce) and public drunkenness on Tuesday, June 5.

Officers had reported to the area of Herman Lodge Boulevard and Lovers Lane in response to reports of a man darting in and out of traffic. Upon the arrival of one officer, Davis jumped in front of his patrol car to get his attention and a ride home, the report said. Davis told officers he'd had one drink and one beer, yet he was unable to blow into the alco-sensor, choosing instead to rest his chin on the officer's hand during both attempts.

A bag containing a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana was also found in Davis' pocket.

Graffiti gangsters

Three Waynesboro businesses and a billboard were the victims of spray paint last week.

The first report came from Goldberg's Furniture on the morning of June 4. According to that report, the windows of each truck parked behind the store had been painted with the word "ice," "IC," smiley faces and profanity as well.

Ten minutes later, the owner of Capital Furniture reported his vehicle and store had been vandalized, with profanities on the windows of the car and "wave type lines" on the building's windows.

In less than a half-hour, a third report came from Dollar General. "GUTTANIGG" was painted on the front of the building.

Each report stated that the damage had not been there the previous night.

Within a few hours, a fourth incident was reported by the owner of a Sixth Street billboard. He said there were several words spray painted on the sign that he couldn't make out, as well as "F- ." The man said replacing the billboard's sign would cost approximately $850.
