Lightning strikes scooter
These charred remnants are all that's left of Jerry Corum's motorized scooter. "We were sitting here through the middle of the storm and heard a loud pop," said Corum. The loud pop was a bolt of lightning that struck his scooter causing it to catch fire late Saturday night during an isolated thunderstorm. Corum and his wife, Cindy, were unaware of the fire at first. Their neighbors, David and Cathy Bowles, noticed it as they were riding past the house. "David jumped the fence and grabbed the water hose to try to keep the fire from spreading, and Cathy helped get us out of the house," Corum said. Even though the fire did not spread throughout the house, there was extensive smoke damage. "The city should be proud of the Waynesboro Fire Department," said Corum. "They did an outstanding job." The Corums, in the meantime, can't say enough about their neighbors on Susan Court. "You don't know how valuable your neighbors are until something like this happens. It meant a lot."
