John Garner
This summer, Waynesboro native and 1970 graduate of Blakeney High School, John D. Garner, will attend a summer institute at Brown University. He will join a select group of 20 educators from across the United States. The "Challenges to National Security Summer Institute for Secondary Educators" is intended to deepen participating teachers' understandings of the major security challenges facing our nation.
The institute will also intro- duce them to instructional strategies for engaging students in an exploration of international policy and national security. Participating educators will study international terrorism, nuclear proliferation and U.S. foreign policy. The participants will also discuss their implications for national security.
Instructors for the institute are leading scholars in the field of national security and social studies pedagogy. For 33 years, Garner has been a teacher and administrator in the Boston Public School System. He is currently a U.S. History instructor at Muriel S. Snowden International School, the first school in the nation to be dedicated to international studies.
