'FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE'
The memories of men and women who sacrificed for our country were honored Monday morning at the American Legion Post No. 120's Memorial Day Service. After remarks from Post 120 Commander J.D. Smith, County Commissioner Wayne Crockett and Waynesboro Mayor Jesse Stone, guest speaker Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Barr reminded the crowd how important this day is to Americans. "The phrase 'Freedom is never free' has more meaning today than any other day of the year," he said. Local legionnaires also placed white crosses throughout the town in memory of soldiers from Burke County. Some 76 crosses were placed downtown to honor soldiers who fell while fighting, and 48 were placed in front of the Post 120 building in memory of veterans who have passed away. Members of the American Legion Post 180 were honored through the dozens of crosses placed in Sardis by former Legion member Jackie Taylor.
