The Burke County Middle School Abstinence Leadership Group ended its first year on a positive note.

The group, under the direction of Clyte Portis, BCMS Abstinence Education/Mental Health counselor, participated in a Learn and Serve Project, which concluded on Friday, April 27. On this day, the group visited Burke County DFCS (Department of Family and Children Services), met with director Alane Hickman and donated 50 bags to be given to children upon entering foster care. Each bag contained new, essential age-appropriate personal care items such as tooth- paste, toothbrushes, washcloths, shampoo, diapers, wipes, lotion, deodorant, feminine products and soap. The bags, divided by both gender and age, were available for different groups: infant/ toddler, preschool, early elementary, late elementary/early middle and teen.

In addition, placed in each bag were several new items for the children's pleasure (coloring books and crayons, dolls, racecars, puzzles, journals, etc.).

The BCMS Abstinence Leadership Group members worked to gather donations from teachers, family members, friends, local churches and area businesses. Donors included, but were not limited to, numerous Burke County Middle and High school personnel, Southern Bank of Sardis, Small Smiles Dental Clinic of Augusta, CVS Pharmacy (Burke County), Burke County Wal-Mart, Best Western, Jameson Inn, The Women's Fellowship Group of the Christian City of Praise and Meade Johnson (the company that makes Enfamil formula).

The students spearheaded this project from start to finish, pitching it, inventorying and sorting received donations.

"Bravo to this group of young people," Portis said. "They were truly able to link learning with service to their community."
