A crowd of cheering spectators witnessed two incredible pitching performances by a couple of local youngsters last Monday. The boys' teams were battling for first place in the Burke County Recreation Department's Midget boys baseball league.
Jon-Jon Evans, pitching for the Bama Dogs, and Bobby Gay, throwing for J.R. Johnson, battled well past the regulation six innings to help their teams try to post a win.
Evans went 7 1/3 innings giving up only two hits and one run while Gay helped his team to vic- tory by pitching a no-hit shutout. He only allowed two walks in eight innings.
The game was won in the bottom of the eighth with a basesloaded, fielder's choice hit by Dalton Quick. Quick drove in LaKeith Abrams for the only run of the contest.
Both Evans and Gay are sixthgrade starters for the Burke County Middle School Cubs baseball team.
The teams ended up tied for first place after the game.
The Midget boys league, which includes boys ages 11 and 12, has two more weeks of play until the end of the season.
