10 years ago: May 14, 1997

Three men, including the husband of a Jenkins County woman found dead on Highway 25 near the Burke-Jenkins county line, were arrested and charged with her death in an apparent murder for hire scheme. They were Kenneth Allan Anderson, husband of the victim, Kristia Ann Anderson, Bernard Meadows and Charles Reeves.

Harley R. Drew retired after 17 years as Waynesboro's postmaster. He had previously served 24 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a major.

Numerous county organizations were urging the passage of a bond referendum to fund the construction of a new county library. The estimated cost of the new facility was $36,000.

The murder trial of Gordon Tanner, charged in the death of Herman DeLaigle, was underway at the Burke County Court House.

75 years ago: May 13, 1932

The unveiling of a marker commemorating George Washington's visit to Waynesboro was scheduled to take place in front of the "Munnerlyn House" on Liberty Street.

The body of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. was found near his family's residence. The kidnapping of the infant son of the famous aviator had attracted interest throughout the world.
