Spartans place second at state
By Diana Royal Staff Writer

The Spartans narrowly missed a state championship golf title, but they'll settle for the number two spot behind the reigning champs from Trinity Christian School.

Last Monday, that's exactly where Edmund Burke finished - just 11 strokes over Trinity's final of 307.

"I am really proud of this group," coach Mike Smith said of the state runners-up. "They have played hard all year, and this is a great accomplishment. The cold and windy conditions at the Dublin Country Club made the course play harder, and with the added pressure of the state tournament, I think our boys played well."

Low shooters for the Spartans were Jeremy Hayes, 75, Daniel Mobley, 76, Bernie Smith, 77, and Chad Smith, 90.

Hayes, Mobley and Bernie Smith were each selected to the All-State team.

Coach Smith added that the team will lose two seniors - Chad Smith and Daniel Mobley. "They both will be missed," he said. "I have really enjoyed this year and would like to wish Daniel the best with his step up to the next level of golf."

Last week, Mobley signed a scholarship to play golf for Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah.

The Spartans were also the Region 2-AA runner-up.
