State AAA golf held in Burke Burke County's debut as a host for the Georgia High School Association AAA state tournament was a success, according to Burke County High School athletic director and golf coach Wade Marchman. The event brought 160 golfers to Waynesboro, along with their families and coaches. Many of the schools came to town two or three days early to play additional practice rounds. After the tournament, Coach Marchman said he felt like the event went well and that he had heard nothing but compliments from coaches and parents. He said the Waynesboro Country Club and Applewood Golf Course were especially helpful in making the tournament run smoothly and thanked local businesses and volunteers who devoted their time and resources to the event. "We were only able to do this because of the support in this community," Coach Marchman said. "I would never have tackled this task if I didn't know up front that we'd have the support to make it come off like it did. Who knows? Maybe they'll ask us to have it again" Coach Marchman said he especially appreciated the tremendous help from the players' parents and extended "an extra special thank you" to his wife, Laura. Mary Helen McElreath served as tournament director on behalf of Burke County for the girls tournament at Applewood. |
