Looking Back 10 years ago: May 7, 1997 A 25-year-old Jenkins County woman was found shot to death in her car on Highway 25 near the county line. She had been on her way home from her job as a customer service manager at the North Augusta Wal-Mart. A mistrial was declared in the murder trial of Willie Palmer. Defense attorneys had not been given a statement from the key witness in the death penalty case. 25 years ago: May 12, 1982 Burke County Hospital Administrator Jim Emery was relieved of his duties by the North Carolina firm which managed the hospital. No reason was given by a spokesman for Carolina Hospital and Health Services. St. Michael's Episcopal Church broke ground for construction of a 2,300-square foot addition to the church at the corner of Liberty and Barron streets. 50 years ago: May 9, 1957 The Waynesboro High School golf team won first place in the state tournament (Class C) in Valdosta. Team members included John Mundy, George DeLoach, Jack Cox, Charles Wallace and alternate Gary Glover. 75 years ago: May 6, 1932 Notorious gangster Al Capone was brought to Atlanta to begin serving an 11-year sentence in the federal penitentiary. Waynesboro City Marshal T. W. Tinley warned residents that any dogs running loose in the city would be shot. Chance & Hopkins advertised Goodrich "Cavalier" tires for $4.79 each. |
