Relay kicks off Friday
By Diana Royal Staff Writer

Burke Countains have once again raised funds to help find a cure for cancer, and they will take to their luminary-lit track this Friday, May 11, in the 2007 Burke County Relay For Life.

The event, which will be held at Blakeney Elementary and Waynesboro Primary schools, will get underway with a survivors' reception at 6 p.m. Then, survivors and their caregivers will start the 12- hour walk with the ceremonial opening lap.

This year could mark one of the most entertaining Relays to date with the Begging Baby Buggy Parade and the Jail and Bail.

Following the opening laps, babies will hit the track in their strollers, dressed to the nines as they use their cute little faces and innocent smiles to beg for money. Event chair Jackie Eskew said she hopes to see some "big" babies, too. "I'd love to see some adults dressed up, riding around in shopping carts begging for money," she said.

If you've got a dollar, you can also send someone to the Mizell Ford Jail. Detainees will have to raise $10 bail to reclaim their freedom.

Also new this year will be the "serious and silly" Relay Idol competition. Anyone may participate for $10, and the winner will pick which Relay team gets to add the monies collected to their team's total.

Need a haircut? Relay's got onsite hair services as well.

Luminaries may also be purchased by calling Tammy Bohm at 706-437-8779 or by contacting Rhonda Burke at Queensborough National Bank and Trust Co. in Waynesboro, 706-554-0460.

Throughout the evening, various campsites will have grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, fried fish, hot chicken wings, roasted peanuts, popcorn and much more. Activities for children and live entertainment have also been planned.

To make a donation, send someone to "jail" or for any other information, contact Eskew at 706-466-0667.

Thanks to this year's sponsors, Relayers are on their way to reaching their $87,000 goal, having already collected more than $25,000.

Georgia Power is the presenting sponsor, having contributed $5,000. Gold sponsors providing $1,000 are Waynesboro Exchange Club, Southern Bank, Wal-Mart, William Mizell Ford and Oglethorpe Power. Silver sponsors ($500) are A&W Oil, Best Office Solutions, First Baptist Church, Planters EMC, Dr. Lamar Murray, Purification Cellutions, Burke Medical Center and Burke Apothecary, and bronze sponsors ($250) are Shivers Real Estate, First National Bank, Collins Bonded Warehouse, Countryside Personal Care Home, Jesse L. Jones Painting, Queensborough National Bank and Trust Co., Town and Country Woman's Club, Rhodes Murphy Tax Service, Jones Construction Inc. and Highsmith Building Services Inc.
