FUN ON THE FARM
Above, Quintus Williams lights up as he scratches an appreciative Skittles, the fouryear old Brown Swiss cow that helped local dairy farmer Jimmy Franks educate school children about milk production. Franks and several other volunteers worked with the Burke County Cooperative Extension Office to host an Ag Awareness program at the University of Georgia's Southeast Research and Education Center in Midville. For three days, Extension staff, Georgia Department of Natural Resources officers, Burke County Master Gardeners and several farmers and community volunteers taught local third-graders about farm equipment, safety and growing row crops and vegetables. The children will get to return in October to see the progress of the crops. At right, DNR's John Bearden outfits Blakeney Elementary School student Willie Lawson Jr. with a lifejacket during a talk about safety.
