Burke County High School will host the region meet this weekend for girls' track and field events, and the host school has shown plenty of promise for a region title this season.
The boys' and girls' teams most recently tamed the Wolfpack from Greenbrier High School and grounded the Eagles from Jenkins County High School.
Last week, the Lady Bears beat the two schools with a score of 82.5, compared to the Wolfpack's 43.5 and the Eagles' 23.
The boys chalked up 76 points to Jenkins County's 49 and Greenbrier's 19. Damien Johnson recorded his personal best in the triple jump, leaping 42'8 ½", and Cornelius Washington recorded a season's best of 22.02 seconds in the 200- meter dash, according to Coach Purvis Dukes.
While Coach Dukes said the team still has some work to do and has "a few kids nursing injuries," he's looking for good finishes at the region meets this weekend and next.
"We'll work on those things it takes to win the region meet," he said. "We're pushing the kids to do their season's best."
Coach Dukes also said the warmer weather will help the athletes run faster and throw farther than they have in the unseasonable cold of late.
BCHS will host the girls' 3- AAA region meet Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, beginning at 11 a.m. each day.
The boys' region meet will be held Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, at Cross Creek High School in south Augusta.
