Pedestrian beaten, robbed by teenager
By Elizabeth Billips Associate Editor

A local man was beaten and robbed as he walked home from the grocery store last Sunday.

Residents called police when they saw a bleeding man, later identified as Bennie Walker, 48, walking down West Seventh Street.

According to Sgt. Bobbie Jockel of the Waynesboro Police Department, Raynard Ellison, 19, had allegedly pushed Walker down and shoved his face into the asphalt before stealing $10 from his pants pocket.

"It was so bad, his eyes were swollen shut," Sgt. Jockel said.

Walker told officers he'd walked to and from Wal-Mart where he purchased dishwashing detergent and onions.

They noted that Walker's hair and clothing were saturated with detergent and that onions were scattered on Holly Street where he'd been attacked.

Sgt. Jockel said warrants were issued for Ellison's arrest on charges of robbery and battery. She said he is also wanted for an attempted break-in last month at Burke Pawn and Firearms.
