Kimberly Donna Dixon, a sophomore at Edmund Burke Academy, has been selected to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar at Oglethorpe University in May or June of 2007.
Kimberly had to submit an application and be selected for this honor. Last year, over 8,500 high school sophomores attended one of 71 HOBY Leadership seminars throughout the United States.
When asked about the origin of HOBY, Hugh O’Brian explained: “In 1958, I had a vision of making a difference in the lives of young people.”
Now, five decades later, the program continues to encourage participants to “enhance their leadership skills and discover that they are not alone in their desire to lead and to make their schools and communities a better place.”
Kimberly is the daughter of Randal and Amy Dixon of Girard. She is a member of the Beta Club, the math team and the school’s chapter of SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving). She is one of the charter members of the Student Advisory Board, which was established this year. She is also a teacher’s aide.
Outside the classroom, Kimberly plays softball, basketball and tennis for the Spartan teams. In addition, she finds time to help out in the family’s peanut business.
Kimberly will be sponsored by Waynesboro’s Town & Country Woman’s Club.
This organization has encouraged young people to aspire to be leaders by supporting HOBY seminars for a number of years.
