Soil & Nematode Sampling
      Burke County farmers are busy gathering crops during the fall harvest season. Even though time is in short supply, the ideal time to begin preparing for the 2008 crop is now. Sampling fields for nematodes should be done during October and early November, prior to the soil temperature dropping.

Eat your heart out
     Cecil and Margie McCollum had an interesting find, thanks to the local produce section. While the couple was emptying a packaged bag of potatoes, they came across this one in the perfect shape of a heart. Cecil says the potato oddity will probably end up "in the cook-pot" after they've shown it to family and friends.

Local Farm Bureau launches food drive
      Burke County Farm Bureau wants to make sure the less fortunate don't go hungry this Thanksgiving. The West Sixth Street business is collecting staple food items through Nov. 10 during the statewide Harvest for All Campaign, coordinated by the Georgia Farm Bureau for the third year running.

Elephants roam Burke County ranch
     A pair of African elephants was relaxing in Burke County last week. Dumbo, left, and Gina stopped by Graystone Ranch for some downtime during their trek home to Florida. The 7,500-pounders are part of Linda and Terry's "Elephant and Tiger Encounter" - an educational program that tours for 12-15 weeks each year. Kandi and Rusty Eskew say the animals will be back at Graystone Ranch this February for the ranch's African Safari program that is held in celebration of Black History Month. Also "vacationing" with the elephants at Graystone were a streak of Siberian tigers, who'll also be back for the Black History program.
