Talia Johnson

Air Force Airman 1st Class Talia L. Johnson graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Johnson is the daughter of Oreaia Johnson of Sardis. She is a 2002 graduate of Burke County High School and received a bachelor's degree in 2006 from Jacksonville University in Florida.

Jacob Van Dyke

Army Staff Sgt. Jacob R. Van Dyke has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal for participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves by either outstanding achievement or meritorious service to the United States.

Van Dyke, a watercraft operator, has served in the military for 10 years.

He is the son of William J. Van Dyke of Keysville, and his wife, Angela, is the daughter of Charles and Georgina Gerhart of Heathsville, Va.
