Meetings scheduled about Vogtle's future

Both existing, new reactors to be discussed at NRC meetings

Local citizens will have three chances to weigh in during the next week on decisions affecting Plant Vogtle's future.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27, and Thursday, Oct. 4, and will be held at the Waynesboro/Burke Campus of Augusta Technical College.

The first two meetings, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 27), focus on the license renewal application for the nuclear generating facility.

Public comments on potential environmental impacts of license renewal will be accepted at both meeting times. A one-hour open house will also be held before each session.

Southern Nuclear Operating Company applied in June to have the licenses for Vogtle units one and two renewed for 20 additional years each. Approval of the application would extend their operation to 2047 and 2049, respectively. Their current licenses expire in January 2027 and February 2029.

The third meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4, focuses on the potential construction of two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle.

The NRC invites public comment on their draft of a statement detailing the environmental effects of new reactors at Vogtle.

The Environmental Impact Statement is the culmination of months of research conducted by the NRC at the site.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and an open house will be held from 5-7 p.m. SPEAK UP ABOUT PLANT VOGTLE'S
