Scrimmage changed to Thursday
Regular season play begins Aug. 31 in Jefferson County
      Burke County fans will get to see their boys in action one night earlier than expected. The scrimmage against Warren County has been moved to Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Friday. The Bears' first regular season game pits them against Jefferson County High School.

      A young Waynesboro horsewoman rode her way into the world spotlight recently. At the prestigious American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Youth World Show in Fort Worth, Texas, Tara Salter placed in the top 10 in her class on her gelding, Cruzin' for Chocolate.

Good weigh to end summer
     Last Wednesday during a fishing trip at Clark Hill, Austin Daniel caught his personal best striped bass - it weighed in at 31 pounds and was 41 inches. He is an active member of the National Striped Bass association and recently finished competing in the 2007 season where he won "Youth Angler of the Year." He will compete in the national finals on Lake Cherokee Tennessee in November.

Community pep rally scheduled to kick off football
Powder puff game to follow
      Community members will get the chance to gear up for the season along with Burke County players, coaches and students before the Bears' first game. Burke County High School cheerleaders will host a community pep rally. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 30, on the football field.

Spartans look good in scrimmage
      While their coach says they still have some work to do, the Spartans fared well in a pre-season scrimmage against Curtis Baptist last Friday. According to head coach Jeremy Blackstock, Edmund Burke's game plan was to focus on three goals - knowing and executing all assignments, giving 100 percent effort on each play and staying mentally tough.

EBA goes 2-2 on the diamond
      The Lady Spartans began their season with a head coach only two weeks on the job, but their 2-2 record shows the change hasn't thrown them off course. Their first loss of the season came last Tuesday at the hands of AAA school Pinewood Christian Academy.

A New Era of Football
New head coach says team could meet high expectations this year
      When he took the head coaching job at Laney High School in Augusta, less than 25 players showed up for workouts. Three years later, he had the team headed to the state playoffs for Laney's first appearance since the '70s. The school captured the region championship in 2000, a title it hadn't held in nearly 30 years.

Internet technology allows fans to listen in online
      Fans who can't make it to the game to root for the Bears can still follow the gridiron action with the help of a computer. Thanks to audio streaming technology, every Burke County football game will be broadcast live over the Internet.

Cheer camp champs
     Burke County High School varsity cheerleaders attended a UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) camp on Jekyll Island, July 25-28. On the last day of camp they competed against other varsity squads for the title of "Camp Champ." Burke cheerleaders competed in both the cheer and x-treme routine divisions, placing third and first, respectively. The first place finish in x-treme routine, which is a dance and stunt routine, helped the girls become Camp Champs. The squad was also invited to cheer in pre-game festivities at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.
