      Under the big red hats are little ladies eating cold watermelon and shooting the breeze. It's the weekly Red Hat meeting of the women at Brentwood Terrace Health Care Center, and more than 20 of them wouldn't miss it for the world.

Power bills could surge again
      Electric bills could increase for Georgia Power customers next year. The company has asked the Georgia Public Service Commission for permission to increase its base rates. If approved, the average customer's bill will increase by about 7 percent, or $6.67 per month, according to Georgia Power spokesperson Lynn Wallace. The new rate would go into effect January 2008.

      One local landscaper won't be charging a dime for the lawns mowed and hedges trimmed at some homes around Burke County. He's skipping the bill in an effort to help families of men and women away from home serving in the armed forces.

Wildlife agreement encourages endangered species, gives Georgia Power more flexibility
      Georgia Power officials have agreed to encourage endangered species on land surrounding Plant Vogtle but will be exempt from certain federal wildlife regulations should populations increase. Georgia Power and Southern Nuclear signed a Safe Harbor Management Agreement with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) last month.

      Communities in Schools' staff members are breathing easier this week. Saturday, executive director Deena Sams announced that funding for the organization's teen center was put back in the federal budget.

Rockets' red glare
     Emma Rogers, 2, watched with awe as the skies on the south end of town exploded into color during the Waynesboro Jaycees' Fourth of July fireworks show. Cars and trucks brimming with children lined Burke Veterans Parkway and filled parking lots as families capped off Independence Day with the annual display. A few anxious revelers set off their own smaller arsenals of fire crackers and sparklers as they waited for the real show to begin.
