Bells and whistles
      Last week's release of the iPhone may make some wonder - if we're not too busy scanning the Internet with our phones - if we haven't become a society obsessed with bells and whistles. "Bells and whistles" means technology that entertains rather than enlightens or truly changes lives. Bells and whistles could be replaced by the words gizmo, gadget, or doo-dad.

Looking Back
      10 years ago: July 9, 1997 Sunlite Casual Furniture Inc. (formerly Sunbeam) closed, leaving 568 employees jobless. The company consolidated its Waynesboro plant with a plant in Paragould, Ark. Sisters Mallory and Megan Register made roughly $6 during a lemonade sale on Victory Drive.

      If we want to have a say in what types of businesses we need or will support in Waynesboro, we need to step up to the plate and do something. About 10 years ago we ran ads in The True Citizen asking local citizens what kinds of business they would like to see in Burke County.

      Editor: Earlier this year, I had the esteemed honor of being appointed to the Georgia Rural Development Council by Governor Perdue. It is the primary responsibility of the GRDC to advise the governor on various ways to improve the lives of those of us who reside in the rural communities of our state.
