BOE budget increases to $41 million next school term
      School board members are hoping the tax digest goes up next year. The Burke County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a $41.1 million budget for the coming year. The hefty budget requires more money than they expect to bring in, creating a $5 million deficit for the year.

Standardized tests send fewer students to summer school
      Fewer Burke County students are sitting in summer school due to their performance on standardized tests this year. The promotion of all third, fifth and eighth graders hinges on whether or not they pass the math and English/language arts portions of the Criterion Referenced Competency Test. If they don't, they must attend summer school for remediation and retest.

Blakeney students excelling academically are honored
      Blakeney Elementary School's 29th annual Honors Day programs were held May 15-16, honoring students who excelled this school term in areas such as leadership, scholarship, attendance, citizenship and service to the school. Neil Pavao was awarded the Emanuel Larkin Jr. Scholastic Award for having the highest academic average in the Discovery Program.
