Former bus driver convicted of child molestation
      A former Burke County school bus driver was sentenced Monday for impregnating a 15-year-old passenger on his route. Renzo Whitfield, 40, of Waynesboro, pleaded guilty to child molestation in Burke County Superior Court before Judge James Blanchard Jr.

Sardis police get raises; fines set for water violations
      Sardis police will see an increase on their checks come their next payday. After its regular monthly meeting last Tuesday, Sardis City Council went into closed session to discuss personnel but emerged to grant a $1 per hour raise to each employee of the police department. The vote was unanimous, and councilman Jeff Oliver was absent from the meeting.

      The driver of this mangled Buick sedan escaped serious injury after another vehicle struck him from behind on North LIberty Street and caused his vehicle to crash into a road sign and overturn.

Eight arrested in WPD roadblock
      More than 800 cars were checked during a roadblock Friday night, and eight people were arrested, including three for alcohol or drug related charges. The Waynesboro Police Department coordinated the nearly five-hour roadblock, which took place at two separate locations along Highway 56.

Trafficking suspect tries to flush evidence

      The following arrests and citations were reported last week by the Waynesboro Police Department: Monday, June 18 ·+ Marion Leon Hamilton Jr., 25, of 108 Layne St., Waynesboro, was arrested for two counts of battery (one under the Family Violence Act) and obstruction of a person making an emergency phone call. A $3,900 property bond was posted.

      Disappearing act Officers towed a North Augusta woman's car after she abandoned it near Friday night's roadblock. Police said the car was sitting half-on, half-off the road with the headlights and interior lights left on, but the keys gone. In the console was a half-finished beer.
