Veto hits home
      Gov. Sonny Perdue really stirred things up last week when he vetoed 41 bills that had been passed in the last session of the Georgia General Assembly. In all, the governor took $130 million in construction projects and other spending out of the budget, which had been approved by both houses of the legislature.

Looking Back
      10 years ago: June 4, 1997 One-hundred thirty-thousand dollars was raised toward a goal of a half-million dollars for the new Augusta Tech campus to be built here. Major donors included Kwikset, Burke County Hospital, First National Bank and the Waynesboro Bank.

      My co-worker, Melodye Williams's son, Justin Grey McBride was commissioned as a second lieutenant last Friday in Milledgeville and graduated from Georgia Military College with an associate's degree on Saturday. He will attend Georgia Southern University where he will persue a degree in history.

BACK TO SCHOOL
      This past weekend I was back in high school. Most people never want to return to high school. In fact, many people spend a lot of money trying to forget high school. But I went back. I assume an explanation is in order. My wife was more popular than I in high school. Even though we went to different high schools in different states, we both ran for a senior class office.

PRAYER FOR TODAY
      Dear Lord, please hear my prayer. School's out. Summer's here. We've anticipated this day since mid-September. And as much as I enjoy my children's company, I equally despise watching them lay around wasting their precious youth complaining they have nothing to do, there's nothing to eat, and that they're too tired to help with anymore chores.
