Bears boast strong arms, fast feet at state meet
      Only four people ran faster at the state AAA track meet, but that still wasn't good enough for Cornelius Washington. He wanted to win. No matter that the 6'5", 230 pound Burke County High School junior football standout outsized most of his competitors in the 100 meters by about half a foot and 50 pounds- he was used to crossing that finish line first.

White and Blue battle in spring scrimmage
      The Burke County High School football team played its inter-squad scrimmage Friday night. The game pit the Blue against the White, with an effort by head football coach Eric Parker to evenly distribute the talent between the two teams.

Spartans look to rebuild in the fall
      With brand new offensive and defensive lines, how will Edmund Burke Academy fare during the 2007 football season? Now that spring practice is complete, head coach Jeremy Blackstock says so far, so good. At the culmination of practice, the Spartans participated in a scrimmage last Friday, facing off against John Hancock Academy of Sparta and Monroe Academy of Forsyth.

With no hits Midget boys battle eight innings
      A crowd of cheering spectators witnessed two incredible pitching performances by a couple of local youngsters last Monday. The boys' teams were battling for first place in the Burke County Recreation Department's Midget boys baseball league. Jon-Jon Evans, pitching for the Bama Dogs, and Bobby Gay, throwing for J.R.

     In last week's The True Citizen, another student's photo was inadvertently placed with the track and field story that reported Jaquetta Chandler's new school record for the 1,600 meters. Chandler, a freshman at Burke County High School, is pictured above.
