Burke County High School will host the region meet this weekend for girls' track and field events, and the host school has shown plenty of promise for a region title this season. The Bears were down 5-0 by the fourth inning, but the home team wouldn't give up. They answered the challenge in the fifth, sending five of their batters across home plate. The doubles team of Amy Bunn and Katie Kittrell of Edmund Burke Academy finished third in the Region 2-AA tournament last week and earned a spot in the state competition. The girls headed to Tifton this week, where they competed in the state individual tournament yesterday (Tuesday, April 17). More ... Edmund Burke tracksters will travel to Statesboro tomorrow (Thursday, April 19) to compete in the Region 2-AA meet. Coaches seemed optimistic on how the two teams would fare, indicating that they are looking to see some of their athletes qualify for the state meet to be held in Albany April 26- 28. More ... Edmund Burke Academy's golf team is continually gaining on its competition, according to the team's coach Mike Smith. The Spartans played in Statesboro last Thursday, April 12, at the Forest Heights Country Club, where they played against region foes Bulloch Academy, More ... The pitchers are improving and the young team members are impressing their coach. EBA head baseball coach Jeremy Blackstock said the Spartans are playing hard and, after picking up a crucial region win last week, they have moved closer to securing a spot in the playoffs.
