NRC cites 'minor' issues at plant
Annual performance assessment at Vogtle
      A faulty valve and too much caution kept Plant Vogtle from a spotless performance inspection for 2006. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported last week that Plant Vogtle operated safely last year, but cited two "minor" issues that will bring them back for additional inspections.

Frog Wallow slated for Saturday
      Sardis will be hopping with activity this Saturday as the third annual Frog Wallow Fun Fest gets underway. Vendors will be on site at the Old S.G.A. High School grounds beginning at 9 a.m., and a parade featuring floats, automobiles, tractors and the Burke County High School band (to mention a few) will travel through downtown Sardis starting at 10 a.m. The event will last until 6 p.m.

Wicked winds
     High winds were to blame for downed trees and damaged property over the weekend, including this caved-in carport at the Wallace Street home of Sam and Josetta Green of Waynesboro. Wind gusts up to 35 mph created problems all over the county with numerous reports of trees blocking roadways and falling onto homes and vehicles.

Emergency landing
     The pilot walked away from this Piper airplane after he was forced to land in a field off Chance-Hatcher Road near Alexander Thursday. According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, the oil pressure gauge dropped while pilot David Pitts Jr., 47, of Martinez was on his way from Daniel Field to St. Mary's for reserve duty. Pitts was given directions to the Burke County Airport but had to make an emergency landing when the 1977 airplane stopped running. Although the airplane was extensively damaged, Pitts, its sole occupant, was uninjured.

Property owners urged to open lots for truck parking
      A few entrepreneurs could make a dime off Waynesboro's truck parking ordinance. City officials are calling on property owners to open truck parking lots on the outskirts of Waynesboro, particularly on the south side of town near Lover's Lane and Pecan Chase apartments.

Lie uncovered after stabbing
      Waynesboro Police realized a juvenile they caught shoplifting wasn't really a juvenile when they later arrested her for allegedly stabbing someone in the head with scissors. Felisha Latrice Griffin, 17, of 204 Mead Farm Drive, Waynesboro, was arrested Wednesday, April 11, for affray and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Qualifying ends Friday
For commission seat
      Qualifying for the District 1 seat on the Burke County Board of Commissioners begins 9 a.m. today (Wednesday, April 18). The qualifying fee for the special election is $203.92, which, according to county administrator Merv Waldrop, is 3 percent of the annual salary for the position.

Open house to be held Tuesday
For Comprehensive Plan
      Burke citizens will have the opportunity to view a draft of the Burke County Comprehensive Plan during a countywide open house scheduled for next Tuesday, April 24, from 6-9 p.m. at the Burke County Library. According to Marty Sewell, senior planner for MACTEC Engineering and Consulting Inc.

Ribbon cutting at RSI
     A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the grand opening of RSI Garden Center in Sardis was held Thursday, April 12. Burke County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ashley Roberts, Burke County Administrator Merv Waldrop, Capital City Bank Community President Beverly Black, A&W Oil Vice President Chip Barefield and The True Citizen General Manager Bonnie Taylor were on hand for the ceremony. RSI Garden Center is located at 714 Charles Perry Ave. Business hours are Tuesday-Friday 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. You can reach owners, Mike and Kathleen Rogers, at 478-569-9935. In addition to being a complete garden center with a container garden specialist, landscaping design and lawn maintenance services are also available.
