Sixty-four more families could make their homes in Pecan Grove next year. Next month, construction of phase two will begin, including a much-needed access road onto Lovers Lane. Frigid temperatures over Easter weekend left local producers concerned for the ripening fruit in their fields. Temperatures plummeted over the weekend reaching the freezing point or below Saturday and Sunday nights. Fortunately, Tim and Bonita Myers of The Strawberry Patch and Dick Byne of Byne Blueberries were able to use special frost protection measures to save their crops from any enduring damage. Pecan, corn and small grains producers may not have fared so well, according to Burke County Extension Coordinator Will Duffie. He said much of the young corn crop was burned by the frost, and it will take several days to see the extent of the damage to the nearly mature wheat and pecan crops. More...

Employees at local hotels and restaurants are recovering from a week slammed with Masters' guests. Above, Nan Palmer, Gina Christian and Amy Lane, all volunteers for the Downtown Organization of Retailers (DOOR), put together baskets promoting local restaurants and businesses. The baskets were given to every hotel guest in Waynesboro, and with great results. Good Day Café chef Travis Sperry said Thursday night was probably their busiest ever, comparing only to Valentine's Day. Around 150 regulars and out-of-towners filled the café and al fresco dining area from 6 to nearly 11 p.m. While retailers didn't see much extra traffic, employees at other eateries also reported a big business week.
