Amber Burke Amber Burke
The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) recently selected Amber S. Burke of Midville for membership.
The Society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.
"On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Amber has demonstrated to achieve this level of academic excellence," NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel said.
Burke, a student at Emanuel County Institute, is the daughter of Michael and Sherrie F. Burke of Midville. Grandparents are Jimmy and Patricia Pye and Tommy Burke, all of Millen.
Kenneth Johnson Kenneth L. Johnson, pastor of New Vision Covenant Center of Augusta, will minister the Word of God at the Palm Sunday Service at the Hampton University Chapel Service Sunday, April 1.
A native Augustan, Johnson has ministered to youth and young adults for 30 years. He holds degrees from Augusta Technical College, Augusta State University and is presently enrolled at Southern Wesleyan University. He is an IT Analyst for Southern Company Services at Plant Vogtle.
Kenneth Johnson He and his wife, Ardena, have two children, Kenneth Jr., a graduate of the University of Georgia, and Kenitra, a senior nursing student at the university who serves as president of the Hampton University Gospel Choir, His Chosen Sounds.
Tre'Von McCall
Burke County Spelling Bee champion Tre'Von McCall recently tied for second place in the 2007 Local Qualifying Bee of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The event was held in the news building in downtown Augusta.
Despite making it to the final round of the bee, McCall was finally stumped by the spelling of "prosaic," an adjective meaning factual, dull or ordinary. He tied with the Columbia County spelling bee champion in the qualifying bee.
McCall is an eighth grade student at Burke County Middle School.
He is the son of Valonda Sims and Sean McCall.
McCall's English teacher at BCMS is Leila McCullough.
