The Edmund Burke Academy Spartans dropped two games at home last week, bringing their record to an overall 0-4 so far this season.

The Spartans fell 57-31 to Briarwood Academy Tuesday, Dec. 5, and 80-30 to David Emanuel Academy (DEA) Friday, Dec. 8. They played Thomas Jefferson Academy at home yesterday (Tuesday), but results were unavailable at press time.

The game against Briarwood got off to a good start, with the first quarter ending in a 9-9 deadlock. At halftime, EBA trailed by only a few baskets, 28-17. The third quarter would land the Spartans just 3 points as Briarwood racked up 14, and the game ended with a 57-31 victory for the Bucs.

Head coach Todd Layton said sophomore Jeremy Hayes had his best game of the season, totaling 17 points, 9 of which were attributed to three-pointers.

Boyd Lively had 8 points, and Jayme Elliot also sunk a threepointer.

Lively led in rebounds with 10, and Jim Sandeford had 5; Elliot, 4; Hayes, 3; and Hamp Wade and Bernie Smith each had a pair.

Smith had 3 steals, and Hayes and Sandeford each had 2.

The Spartans went 3-8 from the free-throw line.

DEA jumped to a 25-2 lead by the end of the first quarter

on Friday, and held the Spartans to just 7 points in the entire first half. The Eagles’ Dawda Njie, a 6’7” senior, was playing above the rim and had accumulated 20 points by halftime.

Hayes led with 14 points, including two three-pointers, followed by Sandeford with 5, also including a three-pointer. Elliot also hit the basket with a threepoint shot.

Lively had 8 rebounds, while Sandeford and Hayes both had 4.

From the line, the Spartans were 4-10.

Layton said the Spartans played with good effort and never quit, and they actually outscored the Eagles in the fourth, 13-12.
