Erase the first period and the Burke County Lady Bears did not fare so badly against the Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack last Friday night.
But that first period sealed the game. Jessica Davis hit two free
throws for the only Burke County points in the period. Greenbrier, however, hit their first five shots, four of which were 3-pointers. At the end of the first, they held a 25-2 lead over Burke County. Burke County lost 71-39 to go to 1-1. Their 52-43 win over Jefferson County improved the Lady Bears' record to 2-1.
In the second period, the Lady Bears held Greenbrier to 10 and put up 10 of their own. In the second half, Greenbrier scored 9 more than the Lady Bears, but Burke County was never able to chip away at the early 23-point deficit. In the third, the Lady Bears had 13 points but Greenbrier had 19; and in the fourth, the Lady Wolfpack had 17 while Burke County had 14.
Despite the early swatting by Greenbrier, the Lady Bears did not give up. They played harder and more aggressively.
Davis led the Lady Bears with 16 points on the night. Whitney Jenkins put up 7.
Davis and Yasma Lynch both put up 18 points Saturday in the win over Jefferson County.
This week, the Lady Bears played Harlem but scores were not available at press time. They will be at Liberty County Friday and host Evans Saturday.
