BCMS students attend mock United Nations
Eighteen Burke County Middle School students recently attended the Model United Nations competition held in Statesboro. Students represented a country that is a member of the real United Nations and attended Block Caucus Sessions as well as sessions of the General Assembly, the Security Council, the World Health Organization, the African Union or the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Resolutions debated were Elimination of International Terrorism; Ending the Use of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment; Globalization and Its Impact on Human Rights; Nuclear Disarmament; Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine; and the Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Dottie Ryan won an honorable mention for her representation of Argentina in the World Health Organization. Countries represented by Burke County students were Argentina, Costa Rica, Kuwait, Liberia, Slovakia and Sri Lanka.
