Borough Battle this weekend

Hundreds of Civil War re-enactors will raise their rifles in Burke County this weekend in remembrance of the Dec. 4, 1864 Battle of Waynesborough. They'll begin arriving at Stonebrier Plantation this Friday to set up their period camps and prepare for their live history exhibits and daily battle reenactments. On Saturday and Sunday, participants are invited to "mingle" in the Confederate and Union campgrounds, learning about gun-smithing, campfire cooking and touring hospital tents with 19th century instruments, medications and reenactors undergoing mock surgeries. Each day at 2 p.m., the public will witness a series of skirmishes, watching infantry lines advance, cannons fire and wagons roll in for the dead and wounded. On Saturday night, a moonlight dance will be held with Civil War era music and re-enactors leading dances like the Virginia Reel and Jump the Broom. The weekend event will also feature sutlers and craftsmen. Admission is $7 for adults (16 and older), $3 for children 6 and over and free to children 5 and under.
