Bears to face Harlem for first time
By Allen Smith Staff Writer

Joe Jones wrestles down the Spartan quarterback in BCHS 14-6 win over Glenn Hills last Friday.
Fresh from their 14-6 win over Glenn Hills, the Burke County Bears host Harlem Friday night. This will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Bears.

Despite their 1-3 record, Burke County head coach Steve Summers knows that the record does not always indicate how good a team really is. Harlem's three loses came at the hands of Evans (16-21), Lincoln County (14-35) and Liberty County (0- 7). Their lone win was a 21-8 win over Aquinas.

"They're a seasoned team," Summers said, noting that the Bulldogs have a lot of experienced juniors and seniors on the team.

"We've got our work cut out for us," he said. Much of that work will be to

continue to work hard and execute well on the field. In the win over Glenn Hills, the Bears' defense played "extremely well", Summer said. The offense executed well and despite one error on an extra-point attempt, the kicking game came together also.

Offensively, the Bears racked up 165 yards on the ground and 16 in the air for 181 yards of total offense. Jonathan Cohen tallied 109 rushing yards on 19 carries. Cohen also caught a 13-yard pass. Brandon Brown rushed 10 times for 43 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Hammett was 2-4 passing for 16 yards. He also dove in for a touchdown. He completed a 3-yard pass to Sam Collins for a 2-point conversion.

Julius Patterson left the game in the first half and did not play the second due to an injured shoulder. Summers said the senior running back and kicker will probably play Friday against Harlem. Brown replaced Patterson against Glenn Hills.

"Brandon did a good job running and blocking," Summers said. "I'm impressed with what he did."

The Spartans scored their only touchdown in the first quarter. Their PAT sailed wide and the Bears put the clamp down on them for the rest of the game. Burke County's two touchdowns came in the second quarter.

Defensively, the Bears held the Spartans to 130 yards on the ground and 69 in the air. They forced three turnovers, a fumble and two interceptions. Joe Jones led the Bears defensively with 7 tackles, 1 assist, a tackle for a loss, a sack and twice hurried the Glenn Hills quarterback. Quention Holmes also had 5 tackles, 4 assists, a tackle for a loss, a QB hurry and a fumble recovery. Alphonso Gillette and Trent Dixon had the two interceptions. Arsenio Strong had 8 tackles and 7 assists. Kenderrick Bonner had 6 tackles and 3 assists

plus a tackle for a loss. Both Tim Prophet and Bryant Wesby had 4 tackles. Prophet had 2 assists and a pair of tackles for a loss. He also had 2 QB hurries. Wesby had 4 assists and a pair of sacks.
