Mrs. Ruby Jenkins Hughes

Mrs. Ruby Jenkins Hughes, 93, of Falls Church, Va., and formerly of Valdosta, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at the Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Va., from complications due to pneumonia.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 4) in Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro with the Rev. Sue Diebolt officiating.

Mrs. Hughes was born in Alexander and grew up in Munnerlyn. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in childhood education and a minor in French. She worked in Valdosta for several years as a social worker. She had lived in Falls Church since 1976.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Fulton and Beulah Lee Skinner Jenkins; two sisters, Clyde Jenkins Chance and Myrtle Jenkins Mills; and one brother, Robert (Robbie) F. Jenkins Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Hunter Smithy of

Lake City, Fla., and Angela Louise Hughes of Falls Church; two grandchildren, Brad Smithy of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Jennifer Smithy Bedenbaugh of Lake City; three great-grandchildren, Will, Ben and Anna Smithy of North Palm Beach; first cousins Leonard Hawes, Bernice Lee Newton, Milner Hawes and Irma Chance of Perkins and Jessie Hawes of S.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives, more than 50 of whom gathered in July of 2003 at her childhood home in Munnerlyn to celebrate her 90th birthday.
