From the Blotter Somebody call a doctor A local physician found himself calling for help when two teenagers stole his cell phone and threw it into the back of a moving truck. According to a Waynesboro Police Department report, De'Andra Martrell Holmes, 17, and a 16-year-old, were spotted prowling around the doctor's office by employees. When the physician noticed his cellular phone was missing, he confronted the pair outside and asked about its whereabouts. Holmes then threw the phone onto the back of a flat bed truck traveling on the street. The physician was able to detain Holmes, but the 16-year-old fled and was later picked up by authorities. Holmes was arrested for theft by taking (misdemeanor) and was released on a $1,300 property bond. The juvenile was arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and theft by taking. He was later released to his mother. The driver of the flat bed truck later contacted the doctor and returned his phone. She said, she said, she said A woman who offered beer and cigarettes as payment for storage complained to officers she couldn't get her furniture back. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the woman came to the WPD requesting an officer to help her get her furniture from two separate residences. The woman said she had a verbal agreement with two other women to hold her belongings for $10 each until she could have the items moved. Then she stated the agreement had actually been for a pack of cigarettes and a case of beer each, according to a report. The woman told officers the two would not release her property until she gave them $75. She also said she had not paid either woman for the storage yet. She was advised to contact the Magistrate Court if she wished to take further action, as the reporting officer found no evidence that a crime had been committed. Holy pink slip! A Burke County deputy responded to a call last Sunday concerning an unwanted pastor. According to the report, a local church deacon said he and other church members had given their pastor a letter stating his services were no longer needed but that he refused to go away. The pastor defended himself, saying the majority of the church wanted him there and that he had done nothing wrong. Sub-terfuge An unidentified man paid for his sub sandwich and then said he'd be back for it later. According to a report filed by the Waynesboro Police Department, a Subway employee was conned out of approximately $56 on Tuesday, Oct. 3, by a man who identified himself as Mike Williams. Witnesses said he paid for a sandwich with a $100 bill, then claimed he had been shorted on his change. After the employee gave the man his change, he couldn't wait for his sandwich and said he'd pick it up after work. Before leaving, he gave a female employee $2, telling her that was so she'd remember him. The employees realized the register was short $56 at the end of their shift. Security tapes showed the black male, with a tattoo on his right arm, accepting his change from the employee, stepping back from the counter while placing something in his pocket, and then handing money back to the employee. No further information on the identity of the man was available. Where's your patrol car when you need it? A law enforcement officer's lawnmower was damaged in a near collision Saturday morning. According to a report, the officer was traveling on Cates Mead Road in his personal pick-up truck when a vehicle came into his lane, causing him to swerve. His lawnmower then fell off its trailer and onto the roadway, causing extensive damage. |
