More counterfeit bills are circulating, and the latest batch to surface looks pretty close to the real thing. Over the past three weeks, numerous fast food restaurants and convenience stores have been stung with fake bills. Last Wednesday, a Hephzibah man got stuck with $1,460 in fake bills when two local men purchased a set of rims from him. Two real twenties were on top of the stack, Burke County investigator Sgt. Dedric Smith said, adding that the victim didn't realize the others were bogus until an unknown person called and said, "The money you got was fake." Sgt. Smith said all 73 bills were printed with one of two different serial numbers. While they are better than other jobs he's seen, Sgt. Smith says they are distinguishable by a missing hologram on the right-hand side and their slightly smaller size. According to investigators, anyone who knowingly tries to use a counterfeit bill will be charged with theft by deception. Anyone who suspects they've received a bad bill should call the sheriff's office at 706-554-2133 or the Waynesboro Police Department at 706-554-8029. More ...
