The Burke County Bears found ways to beat the heat while they endured temperatures topping the 100 degree mark during football camp last week. According to head coach Steve Summers, over 70 young men attended the camp. John Ellis, the team's athletic trainer from Doctor's Hospital, said players were being watched closely for signs of heat illness. "Coach Summers and the other coaches are very aware of the risks and are taking necessary precautions," Ellis said. In order to combat illness, Ellis said the players must be acclimatized to the heat and well hydrated. Players took water breaks at least every 20 minutes while running drills and practicing plays. Two players suffered from cramps earlier in the week, but their signs were recognized and they were treated immediately. See related story, page 10. More...

Burke County High School Principal Dr. Wayne Hickman talks to students and parents at the school's open house. Burke County Schools held open house Sunday afternoon and welcomed more than 4,500 students back for the 2006-07 school term Monday. BCHS, the largest school in the county, opened its doors to 1,171 students the first day. Enrollment figures at the other schools, as of Monday, were 1,051 at Waynesboro Primary, 738 at Blakeney Elementary, 447 at SGA Elementary, 1,027 at Burke County Middle and 70 at Burke County Alternative School. Burke County Schools spokesperson Molly Banks said that more students could register through the week, and official enrollment figures will not stabilize for several days.
