Burke County Schools held open house Sunday afternoon and welcomed more than 4,500 students back for the 2006-07 school term Monday. BCHS, the largest school in the county, opened its doors to 1,171 students the first day. Enrollment figures at the other schools, as of Monday, were 1,051 at Waynesboro Primary, 738 at Blakeney Elementary, 447 at SGA Elementary, 1,027 at Burke County Middle and 70 at Burke County Alternative School. Burke County Schools spokesperson Molly Banks said that more students could register through the week, and official enrollment figures will not stabilize for several days. She added that all schools reported record turnouts for open house.
