Over 100 attend Ogeechee Basin celebration
     The Ogeechee Basin Celebration was held recently at Coleman Lake Restaurant with over 100 in attendance. Participants spent the afternoon exploring the river and its surroundings and learned about the work conducted by the Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper. Members and supporters of the organization learned about the steps being taken to reduce mercury levels in fish in the rivers, to educate the public on river conservation and stop other sources of pollution to our waterways. "It was a beautiful afternoon," said Chandra Brown, Riverkeeper/Executive Director, "and I really appreciate everyone's help in making it such a successful membership meeting and party. I really enjoy getting a chance to meet with other people who care about preserving our rivers and way of life, and I'm looking forward to the next party!" Pictured are, from left, Bill Easterlin, Lora Burns, Max Burns and Jim Abbot as they paddle the finger lake of the Ogeechee River.

Former BCHS student's diploma presented to mother
     Stefan Rountree, a former Burke County High School student and stand-out football player, would have received his high school diploma with his classmates in May. However, a tragic car accident claimed his life in the midst of his senior year. Board of Education vice-chairman Willie Latimore, right, presented Rountree's diploma to his mother, Barbara Griffin, at the board's meeting last Tuesday. Rountree was a three-year starter on the defensive line for the Bears. He planned to attend college this fall and hoped to play professional football one day.
