Waynesboro woman sues city for cutting her water service off

By Roy F. Chalker True Citizen Editor

A Waynesboro resident has filed suit against the City of Waynesboro, claiming city officials violated her right to due process by cutting off her water service.

Portia Washington, who lives at 882 Waters Street, alleges that the city cut off her water service without prior notice “on or about August 11” of this year in spite of the fact that she had been making partial payments on her utility bills since 2004.

Washington was one of about 70 city utility customers whose service was terminated last month for non-payment. City Council subsequently offered to restore services to former customers who signed a consent order with the Burke County Magistrate Court.

Washington contends that her water and sewer service was cut off because of an old unpaid gas bill, and was not the result of unpaid water bills.

Judge Carl Brown had not set a date for hearing the case as of press time this week.
