Relay For Life 2005 raises $72,683

Although Burke County’s Relay For Life 2005 was short of its 83,000 goal, participants were excited to learn they had raised a grand total of $72,683 during their Relay wrap-up session held recently.

"Burke County did a wonderful job this year on the American Cancer Society Relay For Life under the direction of chairperson Jackie Eskew," said American Cancer Society Community Manager Julie Tollison. "Many new teams participated, and the creativity by all the teams, in their themes and fund raising, was outstanding. Over $72,000 was raised, which will support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs of research, education, advocacy and service."

Eskew said the planning team is already gearing up for next year. "We’re excited about Relay and hope to continue building participation . this event touches the hearts of so many people of Burke County, and the dedication and work these teams provide is amazing," she said. "I personally want to thank all the teams and all of our sponsors who so graciously supplied time and money for this cause to fight cancer." Eskew also added a special thanks to Rowell Electric Company, Joe Jeselnick, who provided music throughout the night, and Augusta Technical College, for hosting this year’s event.

During the wrap-up, teams were recognized for their creativity and hard work. Recognition for best interpretation of theme (Relay Goes to the Movies) went to Rock Creek Baptist Church, first place; Mizell Ford, second; and Sardis Medical Center, third. Best decorated campsite awards went to Burke County High School, first; Citizens of Georgia Power, second; and Augusta Technical College, third.

Blakeney Elementary School raised the most team money, $8,546.

Other team totals were Burke Medical Center, $7,635; Plant Vogtle, $5,732; Burke County Middle School, $5,367; Waynesboro Primary School, $5,131; Sardis Medical Center, $3,421; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, $3,037; S.G.A. Elementary School, $2,657; Citizens of Georgia Power, $2,399; Burke County and City, $2,058; Burke County Retired Teachers, $2,035; Burke County High School, $2,021; Rock Creek Baptist, $1,697; Mizell Ford, $1,315; Burke County Women in Business, $1,218; St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, $690; Phillip Grove Baptist Church, $575; Waynesboro Rotary Club, $510; Jack & Jill Daycare, $507; Augusta Technical College, $426; and Palmer Grove Baptist Church, $236.

The presenting sponsor this year was Georgia Power, and corporate sponsors were Bi-Lo, Oglethorpe Power, Wal-Mart, Mizell Ford, First Baptist Church, Dr. B. Lamar Murray, Planters EMC, Ritz Instruments, A&W Oil, Southern Bank, Regions Bank, Best Office Solutions, McKinney Wholesale, Rhodes-Murphy Tax Services, GTS Express, First National Bank, Waynesboro Bank, Shivers Real Estate, Legion, Burke Medical Center, Link Chevrolet, The True Citizen, DJ Productions, Augusta Technical College and Rowell Electric Company.
