Residents of Burke County who have not had their property reassessed in a while may be in for a surprise when notices are issued in August.

According to Pat May of the Burke County Tax Assessor’s Office, some properties may be reassessed at a rate 6 percent higher than previous years. May attributes this rise in value to sales in Burke County indicating that previous assessments have been low.

She notes, however, that if the county lowers the mil rate, taxpayers may not see an increase in their property taxes.

Notices scheduled to go out in August will only be issued to those landowners who have a change or have just purchased property.

Property tax bills will be sent out Oct. 20 and will be due in December.
