26 sexual offenders reside in Burke

Six sex offenders have been added to Burke County’s registry since last August, including two men convicted of child molestation.
Of the 26 sex offenders living in Burke County, the most recently registered are Michael Chason,, Randal Juan Ivey, James McInnis Jr., Wallace Morris, Gregory Parker and Derwin Stone.
In June 2004, 24 persons were registered, but four of them have since been removed.
According to Julie Green, terminal agencies coordinator for the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, James J. Andrews and Keith F. Robinson, both of Waynesboro, were taken off the list when they entered the penal system on unrelated charges.

Raul Delgado, formerly of Sardis, was removed in September when he moved to Lantana, Fla. and registered there.
Jerry Lee Ward, who lived in Waynesboro, was removed when he moved to Greene County, but, according to authorities, he is currently incarcerated.
Of the 26 offenders currently living in Burke County, nearly one-third are convicted child molesters and about half of those are 50 or older.
The offenders, as a whole, range in age from 24 to 74, and all but one are male.

A registry containing information on every sex offender who was paroled or completed his/her sentence after July 1, 1996 is available to the public both in hard copy and online.
The hard copy, which includes a current photograph of each offender, is kept at the front desk at Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Green updates the registry at least twice a month, but says that very few residents ever come in to look at it.
"Beyond our staff, I’d say the registry is extremely underutilized," Green said. "I don’t know why … it’s there for their (the public’s) benefit."

However, the online registry (available at (www.ganet.org/gbi/index.html), which is maintained by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), has had a record number of viewers since convicted sex offender John Couey was found in Augusta last month.
According to a GBI spokesperson, March was a huge month with 2.44 million hits recorded on their registry.
The site only had 400,000 hits for the whole year of 2004, but recorded 422,000 on March 29 alone.
As long as they are on the registry, sex offenders are required to report to the sheriff’s office annually. They must also report any change of address, employment or vehicle within 10 days. Failure to do so results in a felony arrest, Green said.

As of Tuesday April 5, all 26 offenders were believed to be in compliance.
The following list includes all sex offenders registered in Burke County. Anyone who believes an offender is not living at the listed address is asked to immediately call Green at 554-2133. Callers may remain anonymous.
