The
families of Benny Cannady, Dub Harper Jr. and Percy Dixon covet your prayers.
All are patients at the University Health System. Benny's condition is
serious with complications stemming from a stroke after his bypass surgery.
Many of you probably know Benny from the Burke County School System, First
Baptist Church, DeLoach Funeral Home or for his love of music. Little
Dub, as he is affectionately known, is recuperating from brain surgery
that took 10-plus hours. He is responding well and his prognosis is great.
Mr. Percy has been in the hospital for some time now with many health
problems. The Lord knows the need of each family. My prayers are for a
speedy recovery for each man, for each is important to our community!

The Waynesboro Jaycees Empty Stocking Fund is underway. The goal for this
year is $20,000. They will be selling Christmas trees from Southern Bank's
parking lot at the corner of Liberty and 9th streets. A large portion
of the Empty Stocking Fund proceeds come from the Christmas tree sales.
Dig deep into your pockets and help those who are less fortunate this
season!

Vera Gaines came by our office Monday morning to place an ad for going
out of business for M&V Shoes. She has struggled since her store opened
nearly two years ago, and she is finally calling it "quits." I wish her
good luck in finding a job!
******
I was also saddened to learn The Bird Dog Caf‚ has closed. Sharon Daniel
has been in the restaurant business for nearly 18 years in Waynesboro.
I wish her good luck in her future endeavors!

Speaking of business in Burke, I spoke with Michael Bealer, manager of
the local Wal-Mart, and he said the day after Thanksgiving sales were
up 22 percent over last year. I went to the 6 a.m. specials that Friday
and I was shocked at the number of people in the store. The parking lot
was full! The store was packed. I was one of the lucky ones that only
needed a ticket to make my purchase ... paid at the register and picked
up my item outside. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes!

Congratulations to the Burke County High School Bears and Edmund Burke
Academy Spartans for their outstanding play this season.
******
Congratulations to Jean Williams for being named Burke County's 2002 Teacher
of the Year. Jean is director of Fine Arts at Burke County High School.

Don't forget about Christmas on Liberty Square this Friday evening beginning
at 5:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The downtown merchants
will be open until at least 8:30 p.m. with lots of Christmas gift-giving
ideas and some with discounts. Restaurants will be open until the last
customer is served. Join the fun. Bring your children for there is a lot
planned for the little ones. See the story and ads in this week's newspaper
for details.
