The
Waynesboro Jaycees Empty Stocking fund reached a whopping $22,258.60, thanks
to the generous donations from Burke County folks. I want to extend a hearty
thanks to the Waynesboro Jaycees for their continued sponsorship and dedication
to the program.
******I
hope that you and your family had a merry Christmas. My husband, Eddie,
and I gave our 3-year-old granddaughter, Jacie, a pair of Barbie sunglasses
for a Christmas gift. The glasses were hot pink edged in rhinestones that
sparkled, especially on her. She wore them for a while and I saw her pull
up her shirt to place the glasses around her waist. She realized that
was the wrong place. She looked at me and then stuck the glasses in the
neck of her shirt and the biggest grin came over her face. If you know
me well you will constantly see me tucking my glasses into the neck of
whatever top I am wearing. We are influences to our children when we don't
realize it ... even little habits of where to tuck your glasses when they
are not on your nose.
******
I want to welcome our newest employee, Ben Roberts,
staff reporter. Ben is a newcomer to Burke but has strong family ties.
His mother is the former Cynthia Mills, Waynesboro High School Class of
1970. He is making his home in Munnerlyn and is looking forward to meeting
the folks in our area. So, if you know of news, give Ben a call at 554-2111.
Elizabeth Billips, who has worked with us for about three years, is leaving
us to stay home with her newborn son, Paul. She will continue to do a
feature story or two, but will focus on being a mother. We will miss her
greatly, but we know she has a more important job at the moment. We look
forward to her return in about a year.
****** Mary and Charles Bennett's
story in our Christmas edition was one of true faith. The couple's son,
Keinon, died Sept. 5. Keinon was not only Mary's son, but probably her
best friend. The holidays are doubly difficult after the death of a loved
one, especially a first Christmas without that person. Mary and Charles'
story was a testimony of true faith and love. If you missed it, grab your
Dec. 26th edition and read “She could cry a river this Christmas but she
won't” by Elizabeth Billips. Another story that really got my attention
in the same publication was the Rev. Dr. David Carter's Christmas message
of hope and peace. Thank you, David, for you consoling words. ******
We
are compiling a new list of veterans. We need the names of all veterans,
no matter which war they served in. We need their name, branch of service
and the years they served. Special pages are planned for Memorial Day
either May 22 or 29. Please send names and information to:
